GMX Mail IMAP Setup Guide

🔑 About GMX Mail and IMAP

GMX Mail supports IMAP access, which allows EmailWatch to securely monitor your inbox for important emails. Unlike some other providers, GMX typically allows you to use your regular account password for IMAP access, but you'll need to enable IMAP in your settings first.

Important: IMAP access must be enabled in your GMX Mail settings before EmailWatch can connect to your account.

Access your GMX account settings

Open GMX Mail Open in New Tab

Enter your GMX email address and password to sign in.

Open Email Settings

Navigate to POP3 and IMAP settings

Once logged in:

Click the gear icon (Settings) in the top right corner
Select POP3 and IMAP from the menu, or look for Email Settings
You may also find it under Settings > POP3/IMAP

Tip: The settings location may vary slightly depending on whether you're using GMX US, GMX UK, or GMX Germany. Look for "IMAP" in the settings menu.

Enable IMAP Access

Allow third-party apps to access your email

In the POP3 and IMAP settings:

Find the option for Enable access to this account via POP3 and IMAP
Make sure IMAP is enabled (toggle on or check the box)
Click Save to apply the changes

If you see a security warning about enabling IMAP, this is normal. IMAP access allows email apps like EmailWatch to connect to your account.

Prepare Your Credentials

You'll use your regular GMX password

GMX allows you to use your regular account password for IMAP access. Make sure you know:

Your full GMX email address (e.g., [email protected] or [email protected])
Your GMX account password

Enter Your Credentials in EmailWatch

Complete your email setup in the app

Now open the EmailWatch app and add your GMX account:

Go to Add Email Account in the app
Select GMX or Other IMAP as your email provider
Enter your full GMX email address
Enter your GMX password
Tap Connect or Save

Which GMX domain should I use?

GMX operates in multiple regions. Use the domain that matches your email address: @gmx.com (US), @gmx.net (Germany), @gmx.co.uk (UK), etc. The IMAP server is typically imap.gmx.com for US accounts.

Why can't EmailWatch connect to my GMX account?

Make sure IMAP is enabled in your GMX settings (Step 3). If you recently changed your password, try signing in to GMX webmail first to verify your credentials work.

Does GMX support two-factor authentication?

GMX offers two-factor authentication in some regions. If you have 2FA enabled, you may need to create an app-specific password in your security settings to use with EmailWatch.

Is it safe to enable IMAP access?

Yes, IMAP is a standard protocol for accessing email. Your connection is encrypted using SSL/TLS, and EmailWatch only reads your emails to check for matches against your rules.

Can I disable IMAP access later?

Yes, you can disable IMAP access at any time by going back to your GMX settings and turning off the IMAP option. EmailWatch will no longer be able to access your email.
